It can be concluded students’ aspirations toward careers in mathematics and science are likely to influence both their course selection in those areas and the level of effort put forth in their coursework. Many girls unknowingly let math and science knowledge slip away from them, thereby eliminating many future opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Presented lessons for this program help increase female student interest in and knowledge of mathematics and science subject areas and careers by breaking down the processes needed to enter math and science careers so the student participants can understand the steps needed to prepare for and enter science and mathematics careers.  This program meets the National Science Education Standards in several ways and provides many ways to meet the needs of our adolescent female students.  While it provides opportunity and encouragement to pursue science, it also provides access to the world beyond the classroom by linking the students with leading science professionals through a series of investigations and trips.

Women in Charge: Engineering Women’s Lives enables early adolescent girls to see that they have the power to engineer the life of which they dream.  This programs details the teaching strategies, professional development, and support necessary to deliver high quality science education to all students.
